How To Extend Wildcard People Search on MOSS 2007

I just ran across a pair of postings on this from Ramon Scott and Kanwal Khipple (on the SharePointBuzz blog).  Almost every client that I’ve worked with on their Intranet has wanted some sort of variation on this, calling it the Company Directory, the Facebook, or something similar.  The way I’ve always done it was to use a focused search (usually just embedding a link that passes the appropriate keyword into the People Search page), but the scripts that Ramon and Kanwal provide allow the user to take control of their searches on the People Search page themselves.  Nice!

  1. Hi Marc,
I’ve looked into this blogpost and Ramon Scott’s original post on http://www.ramonscott.com/wordpress/?p=8. I’ve tried this solution and it worked fine. Now, however if I try to add a field like Skills, I get no results back. In my case I have a skill called ‘testskill”. Even if I go to the peopleresults.aspx and type in ‘Skills:test it doesn’t work. However If i try to type the whole Skills:testskill, it does work. It looks like only the FirstName and LastName fields can contain wilcard search. However, in my case I also want to include Department, Skills en Workphone.

Do you know if it’s possible to get these resultst using your spwebservices?

  2. Hi Marc,

I tried Ramonscott approach for wild card people search. In my case we have different scenario. We have to keep only one text box like how basic search appears. Is it possible to modify this to meet my requirement if so can you please let me know how I can do it and also I want to do wildcard search using PreferredName instead of FirstName or LastName. But when I replace PreferredName in query string I am not getting any results. Can please help me out to achieve this.

    Thanks in advance.
