Digital content sharing with SharePoint is both a tremendously useful set of features and also a set of capabilities fraught with peril – depending on the type of content and the knowledge level of the person doing the sharing. As most SharePointillists know, SharePoint provides a hierarchical security model. It can get extremely complex either…
Looking at the modified values in Site Contents has always been a quick way to recognize where activity has occurred – if it has. Without running any code we can quickly see if a site has been used recently. (It was easier to eyeball this in SharePoint 2007 in the vertical listing than it is…
One of the big May 4th announcements comes true today, with the release of the Microsoft SharePoint app on iOS. (Yes, we iPhone folks get to have most of the fun!) Read all the details about the release on the Office Blogs. In case you missed the details, the Microsoft SharePoint app for iOS puts “your Intranet…
One of the latest hubbubs in the Office 365 world is around the new Document Library “experience”. (I refuse to use the word “experience” in this sort of context without a little sarcasm and some air quotes.) There’s a new “experience” coming to Office 365 that makes Document Libraries look a lot like the OneDrive…
This post in the series was sitting in my “outbox” for a long time. Sorry to people like Nigel (@Nigel_Price) who probably gave up on me! In a company with 100 employees, clicking on once of the letters are the top of the page will probably narrow things down well enough that you’ll see everyone…
One of the best parts about my job is that I get to travel to exotic locales to talk about SharePoint. My most recent jaunt was to the fine country of Croatia to attend SPC Adriatics. Every conference has its own personality, and SPC Adriatics is know for being fun and filled with meat. Who…
It’s 2016. In 1993, I used Microsoft Access to process over 1,000,000 records of data to implement a product profitability model at Staples – on an IBM 486 machine. We’ve been saddled with a 5000 item limit for views since SharePoint 2010 launched. Oddly, in SharePoint 2007, there was no such limit. When 2010 came…
A few weeks back when I was at the Digital Workplace Conference in Melbourne – a most excellent conference – I saw Adam Cogan (@adamcogan) demonstrate Power BI in his session Improve Your Business Intelligence with Power BI. I’d seen Power BI before a few times, but the way Adam showed it, it finally “clicked” for me. I…
It’s been almost a week since the #FutureOfSharePoint event in San Francisco, and as usual, there are a lot of questions flying around. Wictor Wilen has started a post SharePoint Framework – Initial Questions and Answers and I thought I’d start my own. I’m not going to rehash Wictor’s answers, and will instead focus on the questions…
In the beginning, there was Bill, and Bill was good. Bill revolutionized the concept of computing (along with a handful of others). But somewhere along the way, something happened. It’s not clear exactly what. Maybe it was the disaster of Vista. Maybe it was the reign of Ballmer. What it was exactly doesn’t really matter…
