SPTechCon San Francisco 2013 Wrap Up

Well, I’m back in the snowy Northeast after a great four days at SPTechCon San Francisco 2013. As always, the BZ Media folks put on a great show. SPTechCon is consistently well-run and packed with excellent content, vendors, and attendees.

I wanted to post links to the slide decks from my three sessions. They are available on SlideShare.

If you weren’t at SPTechCon or you were there and missed this session, I’ll be doing it again for the MetaVis SharePoint MVP Webinars Series on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 from 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM EDT. You can register here. The webinar will also be recorded for later viewing.

In addition, as I promised in my third session, here’s a link to a WSP which contains the demos I showed. The WSP is simply the Office365 site saved as a template. In the past, some people have had difficulty instantiating my demo templates in their environments due to activated features not matching. (My rants on the lack of  true portability of SharePoint-based content will probably continue, like Trials and Tribulations: Migrating My Demos Site to Office365, Office365 SharePoint Online Portability Issues Strike Again, and Moving Lists from Hosted WSS 3.0 to Office365 – The ShareGate Way.) If you run into this sort of issue, let me know in the comments and we’ll see what we can work out.

  1. Great content in ‘Creating a Great User Experience in SharePoint’ slides. I always come across situations when not many questions are asked and often the first answer is taken for granted! In some cases the requirement tends to go along the lines of “I’ll like it when I see it!”.

    1. Thanks, Chirag.

As I put together the slides, I worried that it would all seem just too obvious for everyone and they would walk out thinking “I didn’t hear anything new there.” However, quite a few people have told me things similar to what you said, so “Whew.”

I’ve got a few more things I’m going to add into the deck for my next iteration of it. Specifically, some ideas around search, background images, and gamification. If you (or anyone else reading this) have other ideas, I’d love to hear them.

  2. Hi Marc – I’ve created a 365 dev site but not quite sure how to get your .wsp loaded. Do I deploy from Visual Studio 2012 or do something within the 365 site? Do you have any Custom Nav code that works in SharePoint 2010? Your SPTechCon class was great but my memory is faulty (old age, I guess). I can’t remember all the steps that you demo’d. Are there any other articles that describe the steps to create the custom nav? The presentation wasn’t detailed enough for a newbie like me! Thanks for any help you can provide.

    1. Kerry:

Here’s how you can instantiate the WSP. It’s simply the site I showed, saved as a template from Site Settings.

First, upload the WSP file to the Solution Gallery. You access this gallery by going to Site Actions / Site Settings / Solutions (under Galleries) in the root site of your Site Collection. Next, create a new site by going to Site Actions / New Site (assuming your root site is a Team Site) and select the name that you gave the solution. You’ll have to go to the Browse All view in the dialog to see it. At this point, you should have a new subsite containing everything I showed in the session. If you get errors instantiating the WSP, let me know.

  3. Thanks Marc, for three great sessions. I could really use what I learned. I just set up Office 365 and it is 2013. I loaded your solution in the Solution Gallery and activated it. But there is no Site Actions/New site as in 2010. Can your solution work in SP 2013?

    1. Maggie:

The WSP is from the 2010 instance you saw when I demoed it. I can’t test it at the moment, but I doubt that it will work in 2013.
